What is solar reflection?

The sun supports all life on Earth yet in some cases it can have damaging effects. Sunlight can heat up the colorful surfaces of buildings, which can raise their internal temperature, exterior polymers can become overheated and warp.

It is important to reflect away the sun's heat. White surfaces are the best reflectors and black surfaces absorb the most heat. However, using ALTIRIS® pigment even black systems can be made to reflect much more solar energy!

The sun's energy reaches earth as a combination of visible light that allows us to see color, infrared wavelengths that cause most heating, and ultraviolet rays. The largest contributor to the heating effect is infrared rays.

We have designed ALTIRIS® pigment to reflect solar energy, specifically the heat-generating infrared energy
