Product Design and Development

A positive approach to product stewardship is critical at the design and development stage for a new product because environmental benefits and positive health and safety features can be designed into the product by our development teams. If we get it right at this stage, the product stewardship task becomes that much easier through the rest of the product life cycle.

Risk management is one of the basic components of an effective product stewardship program. Development teams are tasked with developing products with lower risks and less chance of misuse than those currently sold in the market.

Regulatory approvals will be required from the relevant national and international authorities regarding environmental, health and safety matters, so this needs to be considered at an early stage in the process.

We strive to ensure that complete information is provided to the Product EHS department in order to enable a good assessment. Product EHS must have the exact formulation of a product disclosing all starting raw materials or all components of a mixture and, in case of a reaction product, the final composition in weight percentage adding up to 100 percent.

Main Considerations

What are the main product stewardship considerations at the Product Design and Development stage?

  • What does it means to the user and environment?
  • If products could be developed, would it ensure both the efficient use of resources and avoid the need for waste disposal?
  • What are the product stewardship issues that need to be addressed to ensure the product is both safe and the project successful?
  • What potential issues could be associated with the use of our products in certain applications?
  • What regulatory aspects need to be considered?
The Product Life Cycle
Looking at each stage of the product life cycle, in turn, the importance of product stewardship becomes even clearer.
