Storage, Packaging and Distribution

Once manufactured, our products are stored in drums, bags, intermediate bulk containers (IBCs), totes or tank containers for delivery to our customers via all modes of transport.

Again, environmental, health and safety issues are paramount as chemicals can be hazardous if not managed correctly. Accidental leaks or spillages must be prepared for. As with manufacturing, there are extensive international, national and regional laws and regulations in place which govern what can and cannot be done. These cover the packaging, labeling and transportation of all our products.

If products are hazardous, such hazards must be highlighted. Requirements to carry out distribution risk assessments and to have emergency response systems in place are described in Huntsman internal standards. Huntsman employs logistic service providers for all of its distribution, so their working practices are audited and monitored in similar ways as for other suppliers to ensure that they maintain the highest EHS standards.

Storage, Packaging and Distribution Challenges

There are a number of key challenges that must be addressed when transferring products from manufacturing sites to the customer's gate:

  • Is the packaging appropriate for the product?
  • Is the packaging appropriate for the distance and mode of transport?
  • Are the packages compliant?
  • Does the labeling satisfy legal requirements?
  • Has the chemical compatibility of the stored products been assessed?
  • Is storage condition required for each product met?
  • Have the haulers had appropriate, adequate training?
  • Have risk assessments of the transport routes been carried out?
  • What are the local road conditions?
  • Are emergency response systems in place?
  • Is the offloading equipment adequate?
  • Have all relevant standards (internal, industry) been met?
The Product Life Cycle
Looking at each stage of the product life cycle, in turn, the importance of product stewardship becomes even clearer.
