Introduction

The Huntsman Tioxide Greatham Site has several different habitats. It is easier to look at key species and prepare Action Plans if they are separated into their respective habitats. The habitat Action Plans will allow separate areas to be managed so that their full potential for wildlife can be realised. In selecting these habitats for action, the UK Biodiversity Action Plan has been taken into account, as well as the nature of the local area.

By maintaining the existence and functioning of the different habitats on the Greatham site, the conservation of most species can usually be maintained. Habitat loss and decline in habitat quality are major factors in the loss or decline of many species.

The Habitat list for the Huntsman Tioxide Greatham Site is as follows:

Wetlands
Marsh and Reedbeds
Ponds (Standing Open Waters)
Saltmarsh
Streams and Ditches
Grazing Marsh

Grassland
Unimproved Neutral Grassland
Improved/Semi-improved Grassland

For each habitat, a description will be given noting the current status and the position of this kind of habitat on the site. The Key species characteristic of the habitat will be listed. Special attention will be paid to those species which breed on the site. Current factors affecting the habitat on a national scale will be noted. National Targets and local objectives for this kind of habitat will be listed, as well as any specific management plans for the habitat on the Greatham Site.
