Biodiversity Action Plans

Biodiversity Action Plans are documents, which set out actions to be carried out to safeguard and enhance biodiversity. In a Biodiversity Action Plan, the current status of a habitat or species is outlined, so that targets and monitoring programs can be established. These ensure that the species or habitat does not drop below its current level, and that hopefully the current level, whether it is area of habitat or numbers of a certain species, can be increased.

The UK Biodiversity Action Plan was published in 1995 and included Action Plans for 116 species and 14 habitats. The remit of this Action Plan was to ‘conserve and enhance biological diversity within the UK and to contribute to the conservation of global biodiversity through all appropriate mechanisms.’ The UK Biodiversity Action Plan suggests a 5-step approach to the national conservation of biodiversity. These steps are:

1. Carry out a biodiversity audit of species and habitats
2. Determine species and habitat priorities
3. Set Goals, objectives and targets
4. Produce and implement Action Plans
5. Monitor and review progress
