An Industrial Biodiversity Action Plan (IBAP) identifies the main wildlife habitats and species occurring on, and adjacent to industrial and commercial sites and presents a number of cost-effective recommendations by which these habitats and species can be conserved and if possible, enhanced. The IBAP is based on a sound survey of the flora and fauna of a particular site and establishes a clear programme of implementation, monitoring and reporting of activities relating to the conservation of biodiversity. Local site BAPs such as IBAPs also place conservation projects in a wider context and try to ensure that the work carried out complements national and regional programmes whenever possible. In this respect, IBAPs are based on similar plans for other areas such as nature reserves and country parks. There are however, a number of differences, mainly that biodiversity conservation is not the prime function of an industrial site. In order to be successful and sustainable IBAPs must:
An IBAP can help to improve the surrounding site and also to enhance the wildlife on this site. A pleasant, green area with natural habitats and diverse wildlife can vastly improve the overall impression of a site and make it a more relaxing place to work. There are other direct and indirect advantages to companies that prepare and implement an Industrial Biodiversity Action Plan. These are:
