Common Hawker on the Greatham Site
Common Hawker breed on site, as there is plenty of ‘dragonfly’ habitat around the ponds and ditches. As yet, dragonfly have been one of the least surveyed groups of species on site, and it is an area which would benefit from more research. Common Hawker has been included here as it is a Local and UK BAP Species, and any management and surveying for this species, would also benefit other dragonfly species on site. There are large plants at the edges of the ponds on site, enabling dragonfly larvae to crawl up the stems at the waters edge before emerging as adults.

Objectives for Common Hawker on the Greatham Site

  • Find out more information on Common Hawker on site through surveying.
  • Further management plans can be added to the BAP once the above has been completed.

Management Plan for Common Hawker on the Greatham Site

  • A detailed dragonfly survey, especially noting main habitat areas and distribution of Common Hawker on site.
  • The active management for amphibia to ensure wide strips of tall vegetation around ponds will also greatly benefit dragonflies on site.
