Invertebrates

Cinnabar Moth caterpillars on ragwort plant.Except for a few casual observations of insects the invertebrates of the site have not yet been studied.

In June 2001 Small White (Pieris rapae), Green-veined White (P. napi), Small Heath (Coenonympha pamphilus) and Speckled Wood (Pararge aegeria) butterflies were recorded. The Speckled Wood was quite common in and around the poplar plantations.
Cinnabar Moth (Tyria jacobaeae) was also recorded together with their caterpillars feeding on ragwort plants. Another, very handsome moth, the Cream-spot Tiger (Arctia villica) was also present. This moth is particularly associated with coastal areas in many parts of its range and whilst not especially rare it is a rather local species that is sadly decreasing in numbers in some regions. The main foodplant of the caterpillars is stinging nettle.

Another localised insect found on the site that is characteristic of sandy heaths and coastal areas is the tiger beetle Cicindela hybrida. This species is absent from northern Europe and in Britain is restricted to the southern counties where the population is possibly decreasing. (see Figure 16)
