Conservation on Greatham Site

Tony Marron with young Fox that was rehabilitated at GreathamTioxide have been actively conserving wildlife on and around its site at Greatham for many years. This has been primarily directed to managing and creating wetland habitats for waterbirds.

Under the INCA “Adopt-a-Species” programme Tioxide have chosen Water Vole, a Biodiversity Action Plan Species, and brackish water crowfoot, a Nationally Scarce plant. New drainage stells on the site have been designed so that they provide optimum habitat for Water Voles and brackish water crowfoot that occurs naturally, although uncommonly, on the company land has been propagated and introduced into other parts of the site.

Staff volunteers calling themselves the Potting Shed Club have carried out much of the conservation work. These volunteers often work in partnership with other organisations such as INCA and the Tees Valley Wildlife Trust.

As well as managing and creating habitats staff volunteers and the Tioxide management have also made many non-operational parts of the site more accessible to interested wildlife groups and school parties. With the help of the Wildlife Trust paths and hides overlooking the wetlands and the estuary have been constructed.
Tioxide co-operates with local and national wildlife initiatives such as the Wetlands Bird Survey (WeBS) and has been a keen supporter, and often award winner in the British Trust for Ornithology’s Birds and Business Challenge (see Box 3).
