Nature Conservation Status of the Tioxide Property

Wall Butterfly on Greatham Site. This butterfly appears to thrive in industrial areas at Teesmouth but is the subject of periodic fluctuations in populations.Parts of Greenabella Marsh are a Natura 2000 site (Box 2). These areas were incorporated into the Tees and Hartlepool Foreshore and Wetlands (THFW) site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in 1997. Subsequently in March 2000 the Greenabella Marsh section of the SSSI were included in the extended Teesmouth and Cleveland Coast Special Protection Area (SPA). At the same time Greenabella was also listed as a Ramsar site under Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance (Williams 1990).

As with the SSSI the extension of the SPA and the Ramsar site boundaries to include part of Greenabella Marsh was primarily to protect important habitat for waterbirds.
