Greatham, Teesside, United Kingdom

Dactylorhiza orchids at Greatham Site. Similar species are found at the Grimsby Site. The factory is situated on the northern bank of the Tees Estuary in northeastern UK
(see Figure 2).

The Tees Estuary is highly industrialized with large production and bulk storage facilities located on both the north and south banks of the river. The major industries are chemicals, oil refining, iron and steel production, chemical and oil storage and power generation, the Tees is also a major port (INCA 1997). Notwithstanding this very high level of industrialisation there are seven sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) around Teesmouth. Some of these SSSIs are also Special Protection Areas (SPAs) under the EC Wild Birds Directive (1994) and designated Wetlands of International Importance for Waterfowl under the Ramsar Convention. The largest protected site, Seal Sands is also a National Nature Reserve designated and managed by English Nature under the Wildlife and Countryside Act, 1981. There are also a number of sites of Nature Conservation Importance around the Tees Estuary (SNCIs).
