Grimsby, Humberside, United Kingdom

Mallard is a common species on the marshland areas around Grimsby SiteThe Tioxide site is located on the southern side of the Humber Estuary between Grimsby and Immingham Dock. (see Figure 13)

There have not been any detailed wildlife surveys on the Tioxide site. However, a rough grassland area on the site called West Field is SNCI, mainly on account of a large population of orchids (Dactylorhyza spp.) numbering some hundreds of plants. With further survey work in this habitat more species of plants and animals will almost certainly be identified. Water Voles are present in the dyke adjacent to the sea wall. This is a national Biodiversity Action Plan Species and its habitat is legally protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act.

Kestrel and Black Redstart have nested on the Tioxide plant in the past.

The Humber Estuary adjacent to the Tioxide property is of international importance for waterbirds, the closest section to the Tioxide works being the Pyewipe mudflats immediately to the north of the industrial site.

There are many other important wildlife areas on the Humber Estuary such as Donna Nook to the southeast of the Tioxide plant, Spurn Point on the northern bank of the estuary and the RSPB Reserve of Black Toft Sands to the northwest.
