Recommendations for Future Biodiversity Management

Cistus landaniferaAs much as possible of the scrub vegetation and Stone Pine habitat on the western part of the site should be retained.

  • The natural regeneration of Stone Pines should be allowed to continue and no more pines should be removed.
  • Any further planting of trees in the wilder parts of the site should be restricted to native species such as stone pines, junipers (Juniperus spp.), cork oaks (Quercus suber) etc. No more eucalyptus should be planted.
  • The wetland area should be maintained.
  • Bare sandy areas need to be conserved since they are important habitats for Stone Curlews and larks.
  • A sandy bank suitable for nesting Bee-eaters should be constructed.
  • Ecological surveys should be continued especially to assess populations of insects, reptiles and amphibians and to record breeding and migrating birds in more detail.
