Birds

Common KingfisherOver 640 species of birds have been recorded as occurring in west Malaysia and Singapore (Jeyarajasingam & Pearson 1999). Of these more than 420 are resident breeding species the rest being migrants occurring with varying regularity or casual vagrants. Many of Malaysia’s birds are associated with the tropical rainforests, mangrove swamps or river estuaries that form the major habitats of the region.

At the beginning of the 20th century tropical forest covered vast areas of Malaysia, but around 60% of this habitat has now been lost to developments of one form or another, but principally agriculture and plantations. Although many birds have adapted to reduced forest cover and man-modified habitats the loss of rainforest has had considerable impact on the distribution and abundance of a large number of species.
The bird life of the Tioxide site and surrounding area at Teluk Kalung has been studied in some detail in March 1992 and September 2000. These surveys have also been supplemented by observations made at the time of the original EIA for the site carried out in early 1990s and by casual records supplied by company employees and site visitors.

At least 77 species of birds have been recorded either on the site or in close proximity and these are given in Table 32.
