Fish

Large and diverse populations of fish occur in the river and estuary system and in the offshore waters adjacent to the Tioxide factory. Species found include mudskippers
(Family: Periophthalmidae), Freshwater Puffer fish (Teraodon leirus) and archer fish (Toxotes sp.) in the mangrove areas together with freshwater species such as Aplocheilus panchax and Trichposis vittatus. Some of the catfish such as Wallago attu and Mystus sp. are caught locally for food (EIA ND).

Marine fish occurring in the area include Spanish Mackerel (Scomberomorus spp.), grouper (Epinephelus spp., Plectropoma spp.), Red Snapper (Lutjanus argentimaculatus and L. malabarius) and anchovies (Stolephorus spp.). Many of these are very important species for the local communities and are discussed in some detail by Brown (ND).
