Invertebrates

The Sungei Chukai has a high diversity of invertebrates with at least 21 species of mollusc and 12 species of crustaceans recorded. Of the latter Fiddler Crabs (Uca spp.) are common in the mangroves both Macrobranchium rosenbergii and the crab Scylla serrata are of commercial importance (Khoon et al.1984, Rahman & de Siva 1983).
Within 5-10 km of the Sungei Chukai there are a number of thriving inshore coral reefs at Karang Kechil, Karang Tenok and Beting Karang Baru.

Although there have been numerous surveys of the estuarine and marine invertebrates around the site, terrestrial invertebrate populations are virtually unstudied. There are however casual observations by company employees and site visitors that indicate the value of further more detailed studies.

Dragonflies are very numerous around the settling lagoons on the main works site. Most of these insects have not as yet been specifically identified although Cropcuthemis servilla and Ischnura senegalensis are known to be present together with Lestes spp., Ictinogomphus spp. Orthetrum spp. and Neurothemis spp.
Butterflies are common both on the main site and especially in the forest areas around Tiger Bay. Much more work is required to catalogue the species present but those listed in Table 31 have already been recorded.
