Umbogintwini, South Africa

Umbogovango wetlands adjacent to the Tioxide Site, South AfricaThe Tioxide site occupies part of a large industrial park operated by AECI Ltd. The site is located on the Natal Coast of South Africa about 15 km south of Durban (see Figure 27).

A number of habitats occur on the Tioxide production site and include scrub and woodlands, open, short-cut grassland, formally planted landscaped areas and industrial structures and buildings. The wildlife and biodiversity of the Tioxide property however, must be considered as a part of the ecology of the overall industrial complex. This covers about 519 ha. of which 50% is currently undeveloped. These wild areas are important wildlife habitats and two sites in particular, Umbogavango and Mamba Valley, have been designated by AECI as reserves with Tioxide and other companies on the complex co-operating in their management (see Birds of the Production Site).
