Recommendations for Future Biodiversity Management

  • More detailed surveys should be carried out before any firm environmental management plans are developed for the site, however, a few preliminary suggestions can be made.
  • Some thistles should be controlled in sub-habitat (ii), but some other less invasive species e.g. black knapweed (Centaurea nigra) flowering in mid to late summer should be introduced to provide nectar for butterflies.
  • The colourful annuals that grew on banks in sub-habitat (ii) adjacent to
  • New Road should be restored. Many of the seeds from the original plants could be lying dormant in the soil and all that is required is that most of the grass is removed and the ground harrowed to produce a denser display some extra seed could be sown. The work would best be carried out during late autumn.
  • More indigenous wild perennial species could be pit-planted over much of the site.
  • No more fish should be introduced into the pond that is already well stocked and probably overstocked. In small ponds excess fish populations greatly reduce populations of aquatic invertebrates and amphibians.
  • Elodea and Typha are very invasive plants and some control might be necessary in the pond.
  • Surveys of amphibians should be carried out in the spring.
