Driving performance in the pharmaceutical sector

HOMBITAN® and BLANC FIXE™ Pigments and Additives for the pharmaceutical industry

Titanium Dioxide pigments and additives for the pharmaceutical industry are derived from natural sources to help create effective pharmaceutical formulations (as classified by NATCOL). They are created with care to deliver whiteness and opacity. Manufactured with tightly controlled particle size distribution, our Titanium Dioxide pigments help you to achieve product consistency in terms of color, opacity and surface texture. Simple to use, easy to disperse and incorporate into your products. Our pigments can help protect your valuable active ingredients from the damaging effects of light, helping extend product shelf life.

We operate to world class standards

Huntsman titanium dioxide pigments and additives are manufactured and managed to conform with all main pharmaceutical directives and regulations.

Tablet coatings and Gelatine capsules Not only do the pigments used in the pharmaceutical industry have to be of extremely high purity and pharmacologically safe, they must also satisfy stringent requirements in terms of their dispersibility, opacity and covering power. Huntsman possesses the required expertise and has many years of experience as a supplier to leading pharmaceutical manufacturers.

HOMBITAN AFDC and HOMBITAN FF-Pharma are notable for their excellent opacity and optimum dispersibility. HOMBITAN FF-Pharma’s chemical purity meets the demands of important official pharmaceuticals standards, such as the European pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur/EP), the Japanese pharmacopoeia (JP) and the US pharmacopoeia (USP).

HOMBITAN AFDC as well as HOMBITAN FF-Pharma are also certified as Halal and Kosher.

X-ray contrast agent X-ray examinations are a procedure indispensable in modern medicine. Our BLANC FIXE XR product range provides specialties for the most diverse applications in this field.

BLANC FIXE XR is used in medicine as a contrast agent and, in addition to its numerous other uses, facilitates X-ray examination of the gastrointestinal tract. As an X-ray barytes powder product, it plays an equally significant role in the preparation of highly filled contrast-agent suspensions. These products are available from Huntsman in a wide range of particle-sizes, making it possible to adjust the viscosity of contrast-agent suspensions to match the specified profile precisely. In addition, this variability permits the use of these Huntsman products for double-contrast examinations. The BLANC FIXE XR product range's microbiological purity and chemical specifications conform to all requirements of  international pharmacopoeia.

When incorporated as an additive into masterbatches and compounds for the production of X-ray-opaque plastics, as used for the making of catheters, drainage tubes and hypodermic needles, BLANC FIXE XR renders these items visible on the X-ray screen. BLANC FIXE XR also makes composites containing bone cement visible in X-ray examinations.

Product range

The basis for contrast agents for X-ray examination of the gastrointestinal tract.

  • Can be used in X-ray-opaque materials for medical purposes, and as a contrast-agent additive in bone cement.
  • BLANC FIXE XR-HX is a particularly fine barium sulfate with an average particle-size of approx. 0.7 µm.
  • BLANC FIXE XR-HN, the standard product has an average particle-size of approx. 1 µm.

HR products are high-purity precipitated coarse barium sulfates.

  • These products are particularly suitable for the preparation of highly-filled low-viscosity contrast-agent suspensions for use in double-contrast procedures.
  • The BLANC FIXE XR-HR grades can be used equally well in combination with each other and/or with Huntsman's fine-particles HX and HM barium sulfate grades.
