Background

Site Description

  • The Geismar facility is Huntsman Polyurethanes' major US-based polyurethanes chemicals plant.
  • Rubicon LLC., is a joint venture which manages production assets owned by Huntsman (MDI, polyols and intermediates) and Chemtura Corporation.
  • Located on an 81-acre site on the Mississippi River, 20 miles south of Baton Rouge and 60 miles north of New Orleans. A second undeveloped 635-acre tract is located nearby.
  • ISO 9002 registered.

Production Data

  • Started production in 1966. Current annual saleable output is approximately 1.1 billion lbs (500 ktonnes), including 860 million lbs (390 ktonnes) of MDI, 160 million lbs (68 ktonnes) of polyols, and 60 million lbs (27 ktonnes) of aniline sales.
  • A major expansion was completed in Q1 2000 to meet the growing worldwide demand for MDI (methyl diphenyl diisocyanate) and to retain leadership in the market. This expansion increased the output of polymeric MDI and of high-quality pure MDI, and enhanced the Geismar plant's position as the world's largest producer of these materials.
  • The polyols plant, commissioned in 1991, produces flexible and rigid specialty polyols and polyol system formulations.
  • The world's leading producer of aniline (40 percent of US capacity), a key ingredient in MDI manufacturing. Annual aniline capacity is 880 million lbs (400 ktonnes).

Environmental Data

  • Spends more than $40 million annually on environmental compliance and on improving environmental performance.
  • 1996 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Excellence Award by Region 6 for Deepwell Operation.
  • Initiated a waste minimization program in 1995, establishing multifunctional committees within each production unit.
  • 1998 Governor's Environmental Leadership Award for Pollution Prevention for TDA use in Polyols Production.
  • 1998 Governor's Environmental Leadership Award for Community Outreach.
  • 1999 Governor's Environmental Leadership Award for Pollution Prevention for Carbon Monoxide reductions at TDI.
  • 2001 Governor's Environmental Leadership Award for Pollution Prevention.
  • 46% reduction in Toxic Release Inventory Chemicals from 2000 versus 1997.
