Huntsman to Launch Cost Effective ‘Free-From’ Surfactants at In-Cosmetics

Surfactant specialists from Huntsman Performance Products will return to In-Cosmetics in April to promote a range of personal care ingredients that reflect the company’s ‘We Care’ philosophy and comply with the needs of cosmetic manufacturers looking to produce hair, body and skin care products free from ethylene oxide (EO), sulfate and silicone.

For many years the creation of shampoos, conditioners, shower gels, soaps and toothpaste has relied upon ingredients that contain sulfates, silicone or ethylene oxide. Offering effective cleansing and emulsifying characteristics, these ingredients help create products with experiences that foam, froth and bubble exceptionally well – giving consumers the sensory cleaning experience they expect. But with mounting public concerns that such ingredients might be a cause of skin irritation, there is now a discernable shift away from using them in Beauty and Personal Care products.

To enable cosmetic companies to still make creamy, rich formulations that deliver long lasting effects, without the use of EO, sulphates and silicone, Huntsman can help cosmetic formulators to develop “free-from” consumer products based on sustainable, naturally derived feedstocks.

Karen Frederix, Global Business Director, Home and Personal Care at Huntsman Performance Products, said: “Many formulators assume that creating products free from EO, sulphate and silicone means compromising on performance or a significant increase in raw material costs. Our experience combined with a wide range of chemistries can help formulators to develop mild personal care products with exactly the same processing benefits and end effects.”

She continued: “This is an important development. Where, for example, ‘sulfate-free’ was once a key differentiator for niche natural personal care brands, mainstream manufacturers are now looking to reformulate top selling beauty, grooming and wellbeing products and relaunch them with powerful ‘free-from’ marketing messages on prominent display. Working with masters of molecular science from Huntsman, manufacturers can do just this, accessing a range of functional chemistries that allow them to drive more value from their brands.”
