Huntsman is a major manufacturer of ethylene glycol, a versatile organic compound that is a clear, moderately viscous, hygroscopic liquid at room temperature. Ethylene glycol is vital to the creation of polyester film, fibers and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) resin for packaging. It is also used in large volumes as a raw material for anti-freeze coolants, heat transfer and hydraulic fluids – marketed as the JEFFCOOL® range.

The hygroscopicity of ethylene glycol makes it useful as a conditioning agent in adhesives, cork, vinyl floor tiles, synthetic rubber, cellulose sponges, printing inks and paper products. It is also used in solvents, plasticizer formulations and numerous other downstream products.

Diethylene glycol (DEG) and triethylene glycol (TEG) have similar applications. DEG is used in the production of unsaturated polyester resins and polyols and TEG is used extensively as a dehydrating agent for natural gas.
