New STAR Award Recognizes Huntsman's Long-term Commitment to Environmental, Health & Safety Excellence

Auburn Hills, Michigan - Huntsman Corporation (NYSE: HUN) today announced that its Auburn Hills, Michigan site has become one of the State’s longest running holders of the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) STAR award. The site was recently granted its fifth consecutive STAR certificate – an accolade it has held continuously since 2004.

The STAR award is a Michigan-wide certification that recognizes employers that have demonstrated exemplary health and safety management systems in the workplace, which go above and beyond MIOSHA standards, and deliver injury and illness incidence rates below the industry average. Part of the Michigan Voluntary Protection Program (MVPP), the STAR award provides a mechanism for companies to evaluate the quality of their health and safety procedures. Companies are assessed every three to four years against stringent criteria, with MVPP inspectors spending three days on site, looking at processes and interviewing employees.

In reconfirming Huntsman’s STAR status at Auburn Hills, MIOSHA commended on the Huntsman culture, noting its management’s commitment, associate involvement, and overall desire to excel in health and safety. Areas of excellence highlighted, included the site’s environmental, health & safety (EHS) self-audit program, which includes EHS procedural reviews that are conducted regularly; the caliber of new hire training and safety orientation; and the site’s Job Safety and Health Analysis (JSHA) program. Auburn Hills has more than 170 JSHAs that address the safe operation of maintenance, machine hall, laboratory and warehouse tasks.

“Congratulations to Huntsman, one of our longest-standing MVPP participants,” said MIOSHA Director Bart Pickelman. “Huntsman became a Rising STAR in 2002, and two years later achieved full STAR status. For the last 15 years, Huntsman has consistently demonstrated its commitment to operating a safe working environment and mentoring other companies toward achievement of their outstanding safety and health management systems. I commend the entire Huntsman team for its vigorous participation and longevity in the MVPP program.”

Pete Panourgias, EHS Manager at Huntsman’s Auburn Hills site, said, “As a team, we’re delighted to have secured STAR status once again. The fact that we’ve held this accolade, without a break for 15 years, is a testimony to the dedication of our management and the efforts of each and every member of our team. At Auburn Hills, we ensure all associates participate in a variety of EHS activities from behavior-based safety participation and JSHA reviews to site inspections and audits; and from hazard recognition and subsequent mitigation, planning, developing, and delivering of site safety meetings to general wellness activities. The results of this work speaks for itself. We’ve not had an injury or a work-related illness at Auburn Hills since 2011 – a statistic we are incredibly proud of. Being part of the MVPP has inevitably contributed to this result – reminding us that the health and safety of our workforce and the environment must always be our first priority.”

Huntsman’s Auburn Hills site develops polyurethane-based products for the automotive, adhesives, coatings, elastomers, footwear and furniture industries, and includes a mix of offices, laboratories, a machine hall and warehouses.
