Huntsman TPU Team Set to Connect with Wire & Cable Manufacturers at K 2016

Osnabruck, GERMANY – This October, global chemical company Huntsman will be at K 2016, promoting the benefits of halogen-free, thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) in the creation of high quality cables, which keep us connected at home, at work and on the move. During K 2016, Huntsman will showcase a number of IROGRAN® TPUs, developed specifically for the wire and cable industry, which support the different ways we now communicate with one another.

For the automotive industry – where the challenge is to create connected cars with advanced communication systems, without affecting fuel consumption – Huntsman has a range of TPUs that are abrasion, heat and oil resistant, and malleable enough to make sharp turns without cracking. Incredibly light and robust these materials can be used in cables for that enable in-car navigation and road-side assistance systems; parking sensor applications; engine control and diagnostic devices; and even in-car wireless local area networks. TPUs include:

- IROGRAN® A 80 P 5039 - IROGRAN® A 80 P 4699
- IROGRAN® A 95 P 5044 - IROGRAN® A 78 P 4766.

At K 2016, Huntsman will also promote IROGRAN® A 85 P 4380 and IROGRAN® A 85 P 4350 – a dynamic duo with many uses including cables for automotive battery and power train applications. Offering the same processing and performance properties as one another, including flame retardancy, IROGRAN® A 85 P 4380 has a matt surface finish while IROGRAN® A 85 P 4350 is glossy.

For standard telecoms applications, Huntsman has a range of IROGRAN® TPUs for use indoors, outdoors, and above and below ground. Tough, weather resistant, and with good wear and pull through properties, grades include:

- IROGRAN® A 80 P 5039 - IROGRAN® A 85 P 4380
- IROGRAN® A 85 P 4441 - IROGRAN® A 85 P 4854
- IROGRAN® A 92 P 4851 - IROGRAN® A 95 P 5044

Two highly fire retardant grades are also available: IROGRAN® A 89 P 5012 DP FR and IROGRAN® A 95 P 5003 FR.

Huntsman’s range of IROGRAN® TPUs for the wire and cable industry also includes specialist materials to keep lines of communication open across the world’s energy industries. Suitable for installation at offshore wind farms, on oil platforms, and in harsh mining environments, IROGRAN® TPU grades that can withstand the toughest environmental conditions, include:

- IROGRAN® A 78 P 4766 - IROGRAN® A 85 P 4380
- IROGRAN® A 85 P 4441 - IROGRAN® A 85 P 5039
- IROGRAN® A 89 P 5012 FR DP - IROGRAN® A 95 P 5003 FR.

Franz Michel, Sales Development Manager EAIME at Huntsman, said: “The way we communicate has changed significantly with the rise of smart phones, tablets and other digital devices. Wherever we are, we expect to get online quickly to do business and keep in touch with loved ones. Although most visible interactions are now wireless, behind the scenes the use of cables is increasing. Most houses now have complex wiring systems in place as well as multiple chargers to power phones, laptops and tablets. And in cars, assistance systems demand the use of more cables; a wellequipped vehicle can now contain up to 8km of cable. Successful communications in all these scenarios depends upon highly robust yet incredibly flexible cabling materials that can keep us connected wherever we are, whatever the conditions.”

“In harsh under hood conditions, where temperatures fluctuate dramatically, cabling materials must be able to withstand hot and cold extremes plus oil and other potentially corrosive substances. In buildings, cables must be pulled through tight spaces without deforming. And at home, the fatigue resistance of power cables is tested daily as chargers are plugged and unplugged, curled and uncurled. Having worked with the wire and cable sector for many years, we understand these challenges, and have designed a broad family of TPUs that closely reflects these requirements.”

Strong and durable, yet incredibly flexible and light, Huntsman’s IROGRAN® TPUs offer excellent flow characteristics, consistent dimensional stability and easy release properties, helping wire and cable manufacturers reduce cycle timesand cut costs. All IROGRAN® TPU materials are halogen-free, fully recyclable and fulfill European and international norms – including RoHS and REACH requirements. The business also has specialist flame retardant grades available and can – through good manufacturing processes (GMP) – offer materials that comply with food contact and NSF requirements.
