Everberg, BELGIUM – Polyurethanes experts from global chemical company Huntsman (NYSE: HUN) will take a brand new technology to K 2016 when it opens for business next week. Experts from the business will be promoting VITROX® ABR technology – a novel range of two-component resins that can help to make the manufacture of abrasive products more time efficient and cost effective, while also delivering improvements in quality, performance and longevity.

Using VITROX® ABR resins to bind mineral and synthetic grains to backing materials and webs, abrasive manufacturers can gain greater control over resin-related steps in the production process  – whether they are creating abrasive products for achieving the perfect finish on metal, wood, leather, glass, ceramics or other specialist substrates.

VITROX® ABR resins have a tunable set of mechanical properties that can be adjusted to accommodate various specific processing and performance parameters. With the ability to fine-tune the viscosity, hardness and reactivity of resins to suit requirements, it is possible to create high quality abrasive products while optimizing line throughput and reducing wastage. VITROX® ABR resins are also free from hazardous classified solvents, another major benefit.

Currently, there are four products in the VITROX® ABR technology range, which can offer major processing and performance benefits in the manufacture of non-woven abrasives.

  • VITROX® ABR 7400 – high viscosity, flexible
  • VITROX® ABR 7600 – high viscosity, rigid
  • VITROX® ABR 2400 – low viscosity, flexible
  • VITROX® ABR 3800 – low viscosity, rigid.

Other VITROX® ABR products are in development and Huntsman is committed to becoming a solution provider to the whole abrasives industry. Later this year the business will commission a dedicated abrasives laboratory at its European research and development headquarters in Everberg, Belgium. This investment will enable the business to extend its work into the field of bonded and coated abrasives. Once open, the new laboratory will be used for product development activities, to support customers in tailoring their solutions, and for customer training purposes.

Johan Van Tongelen, Adhesives Growth Projects Director at Huntsman Polyurethanes, said: “Whether manufacturers are creating abrasives for the treatment of glass, leather or wood, or for polishing metals and ceramics, VITROX® ABR resins are easy to work with and offer a number of clear processing, performance and cost benefits. The reaction from customers who have trialed the products has been positive and we expect the resins to prove popular now they are more widely available to manufacturers across the abrasives industry.”

Huntsman is a member of the Federation of European Producers of Abrasives (FEPA).
