Huntsman’s Technology Helps Create One of the Most Energy Efficient, Sustainable Homes in America

The Woodlands, Texas – Huntsman Corporation (NYSE: HUN) today announced that its spray polyurethane foam (SPF) technology was used to insulate one of the most energy efficient, sustainable homes in America.

CertaSprayTM closed cell foam insulation from CertainTeed Corporation, which is based on Huntsman’s SPF technology, was featured in a home located in Beverly, Mass. and built by Cleantech Homes, LLC. Rated a LEED® Platinum Home, the house is a teaching center that showcases sustainable building techniques and design, as well as new products and construction materials used in high-performance homes.

During the construction phase, a two-pound CertaSpray foam insulation was used for the home’s interior thermal insulation. CertaSpray foam insulation was applied on the walls, roof underlay and attic to protect the home against heat, cold, air infiltration, moisture and sound.

“CertaSpray foam insulation offers outstanding energy efficiency and contributes to a healthy indoor air quality, enhanced moisture management and excellent acoustical control — all critical factors in green building projects,” said Lionel Rossignol, product manager, CertainTeed Insulation. “CertaSpray foam insulation was a natural choice for the home’s interior insulation, and we are honored to have our product in a home built by Cleantech Homes.”

In addition to thermal barrier protection, homes insulated with CertaSpray foam insulation will typically use 30 to 50 percent less energy, when compared to under-insulated homes. This can lead to a reduction in a home’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, and an overall reduction in HVAC equipment costs in new home construction. Homeowners that use CertaSpray foam insulation can also take advantage of an existing energy tax credit of up to $1,500 under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

“Today, energy efficiency is at the forefront of new home construction and home retrofit projects. Architects and builders are looking for innovative ways to build more energy efficient homes, and consumers are looking for ways to reduce their energy bills. This home clearly demonstrates how consumer demand can be satisfied with innovative construction materials, including SPF,” said Monica Ntiru Karamagi, marketing manager, Huntsman Polyurethanes.

These energy saving measures, along with other features found in the home, helped contribute to its LEED Platinum Home rating, meaning it achieved the highest level within the LEED for Homes rating systems.

Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), the LEED rating system is a national third-party
certification system that recognizes leadership in green building. LEED for Homes, launched in February 2008, measures green homebuilding performance based on numerous categories; including site selection, water efficiency, materials and resources, energy and atmosphere, indoor environmental quality, location and linkages, awareness and education, and innovation.

Beginning June 26, the home will be open to public for six months. Appointments to tour the home can be scheduled by visiting www.cleantechbuilt.net.
