Huntsman and edilon)(sedra Fast Track Rail Improvements

EVERBERG, Belgium – Working in close collaboration, rail infrastructure experts edilon)(sedra and Huntsman Polyurethanes’ European Business Development team have developed a new PU foam that is dramatically reducing noise pollution on busy urban transport networks.

Designed for use in vibration dampening elastomers, ACOUSTIFLEX(R) V is a versatile MDI-based foam created to improve the performance of Edilon TRACKELAST – a range of flexible pads and mats. These products act as a fastening and cushioning mechanism between rail tracks and the surface materials on which they sit.

With advanced load bearing characteristics, ACOUSTIFLEX (R) V helps Edilon TRACKELAST support systems evenly distribute the physical forces and vibrations produced when a train travels over a section of track. Its dampening capabilities smooth out any irregularities in a track’s surface, virtually eliminating the dull but pervasive, rumbling noise often produced by a moving train. This type of disturbance is a long-term problem in densely populated urban areas where the installation of new public transport networks is growing rapidly.

In addition, ACOUSTIFLEX (R) V helps Edilon TRACKELAST increase the lifetime of railway sleepers. It reduces the repeated impact of train wheels over time, mitigating any track movement, preventing the attrition of any supporting ballast and cutting track maintenance costs. Edilon TRACKELAST products based on ACOUSTIFLEX (R) V have already been successfully deployed by some of Europe’s leading rail authorities, achieving critical acclaim in light and heavy rail projects from Madrid to Warsaw and from Helsinki to Kumamoto.

Mr Pim Schram, Sales and Marketing Director from edilon)(sedra said: “edilon)(sedra pioneered the use of resilient pads and mats in the rail industry more than fifty years ago. Since then, the sector has grown exponentially with metro, tram and light rail infrastructures now considered a common solution to urban traffic woes. Working with companies like Huntsman, edilon)(sedra has kept pace with changes in the market, creating new materials that can handle the demands of modern rolling stock and heavier patterns of usage.”

“Combining our knowledge of track, concrete and civil engineering processes with Huntsman’s vibration dampening expertise, technical capabilities and willingness to develop a new type of ACOUSTIFLEX (R) foam, we have greatly enhanced our established Edilon TRACKELAST range. We can now help railway, tram and metro companies build durable transport networks that can run, almost silently, with little or no impact on the surrounding area. This is a compelling proposition for any organization managing track replacement or new project installations in central city or suburban areas.”

Jos Couwels, Business Development Manager at Huntsman Polyurethanes said: “Our European Business Development team works tirelessly to create new products and identify different markets for some of Huntsman’s most successful chemistries. Marrying proven product performance with emerging trends in new industries, we identify applications that could benefit from polyurethane-based components.

“Traditionally, ACOUSTIFLEX (R) foam has been used in the automotive and construction sectors. Helping edilon)(sedra translate the benefits of this established product into the rail industry is a prime example of the team’s lateral thinking and the exciting opportunities this offers for both Huntsman and our customers.”
