Huntsman Turns Regulatory Compliance into Innovation Advancements for Aerospace OEMs

THE WOODLANDS, Texas

Aerospace OEMs are preparing for increased build rates in commercial aviation, driven by record backlogs, rising travel demand, and an aging fleet in need of replacement. Keeping pace means qualifying materials quickly and maintaining supply continuity, all while navigating evolving chemical regulations.

At SAMPE 2026, April 27–30 in Seattle, Huntsman Advanced Materials, a division of Huntsman Corporation, will share how manufacturers can turn regulatory compliance from a risk into a strategic advantage, future-proofing their materials portfolios while meeting the demands of next-generation aircraft production.

Dr. David Hatrick, Vice President of Strategic Marketing & Innovation for Huntsman Advanced Materials, will address these industry challenges during a presentation titled “Racing the Clock: Strategies to Stay Ahead of Regulatory Challenges Facing Composite and Adhesive Chemistries” on April 29 at 2 p.m. in Room 335.

Hatrick will explain why reactive compliance strategies put entire value chains at risk, how expanding regulatory frameworks like TSCA and REACH are reshaping materials development, and how innovative tools are helping companies anticipate regulatory changes.

“Huntsman takes a forward-looking, data-driven approach to identify emerging regulatory risks before they impact customers,” said Hatrick. “A specialized Advanced Materials technology team continuously monitors raw materials and regulations, working closely with the business to assess reformulation needs and avoid future constraints.”

Huntsman doesn’t just advise customers on how to navigate this regulatory landscape; it also applies the same philosophy internally. The result is a portfolio of materials that not only meet today’s regulations but are engineered for what comes next.

“We actively gather customer feedback from materials and process engineers to make improvements that don’t just meet more stringent regulations, but also extend shelf life, improve handling, and enhance performance,” said Lucy Mills, Senior Marketing Manager, Aerospace for Huntsman Advanced Materials. “Two of our most recent re-formulations are FST interior adhesives designed for thermoplastic bonding and showcase how we’re future-proofing our aerospace portfolio with low-toxicity chemistry to protect people, the planet, and customer production lines. Thermoplastic adoption continues to grow, particularly in interior applications, such as seat components, panels, and overhead bins. These high‑traffic areas can create bonding challenges, but our FST‑compliant solutions perform reliably and are well‑suited for these environments.”

Jon Abramson, Aerospace Subject Matter Expert for Huntsman Advanced Materials, will highlight this strategy during a Spotlight Presentation titled “Next-Generation FST Polyurethane Adhesives: Engineered for High Use Zones in Aircraft Interiors” on April 28 at 11:30 a.m.

Abramson will discuss how Huntsman has responded to the growing demand for thermoplastic bonding solutions in high-use, high-impact areas of aircraft cabin interiors, and how the company’s reformulation efforts go beyond compliance to deliver significant performance gains.

The presentation will spotlight two recently reformulated aerospace adhesives, URALANE® 5774-1 and URALANE® 5779-1, which address the needs of OEMs navigating the regulatory landscape and the need for thermoplastic bonding solutions:

  • High peel strength engineered for thermoplastic bonding challenges in aircraft interiors
  • FST/self-extinguishing for added safety in cabin applications
  • Reformulated to support evolving chemical regulations while maintaining performance (contains no substances of very high concern as defined by REACH)
  • Practical benefits including improved handling and production continuity
  • URALANE® 5774-1 is qualified to Boeing BMS5-105 and Gulfstream GAA standards, while URALANE® 5779-1 is qualified to BMS5-105, Type 6

A supporting technical white paper on URALANE® 5774-1 and 5779-1 will be available at Huntsman’s booth (J36), providing materials and process engineers with a deeper look at how these structural adhesives are designed to address thermoplastic bonding challenges in aircraft interiors. Conference attendees can also stop by the booth to speak directly with adhesives experts about their materials challenges.

“SAMPE is an important opportunity for Huntsman to understand customer needs, strengthen technical relationships, and inform future product innovation,” Mills added. “We’re looking forward to connecting with engineers and OEM partners to discuss the real-world challenges they’re facing, and how Huntsman can help them meet evolving regulatory requirements while advancing performance and production efficiency.”

Through multiple presentations, booth presence, and a technical product white paper at SAMPE 2026, Huntsman will demonstrate how regulatory compliance can be a catalyst for innovation, enabling safer, more sustainable materials without sacrificing performance.
